Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam has shifted from the Islamic calender to the Gregorian or “Western” calendar as a basis for paying civil servants as part of an austerity package.
Mecca Islam’s holiest site shifted to the western calendar on Sunday, October 2, bringing the oil-rich kingdom in line with many of its energy customers.
It’s part of a larger series of cost-cutting measures recently imposed that includes cancelling some bonuses offered to state employees and hiking fees for entry visas for foreign visitors and residents.
