Celebrating Nigeria at 56 brings to mind the fond memories of her achievements in world football and the captains that led the teams.
Since her 56-year existence, the Nigerian national teams have won four notable competitions with breathtaking performances from the squad which have brought pride to our great nation.
Here are the four captains that have led Nigeria to glory in world football
1. Christian Chukwu
The then Green Eagles announced their arrival on the African football scene when Nigeria played host to the Africa Cup of Nations in 1980. Christian Chukwu led the team to Nigeria’s first ever Nations Cup win in football.

The wing-back defender inspired the rest of the sqaud that had Segun Odegbami, Adokie Amiesimaka, Haruna Ilerika, Best Ogedengbe among other great players to lift the trophy in Lagos.
2. Late Stephen Keshi
He was (until his death) the most decorated and longest serving captain Nigeria had produced in 56 years. The charismatic leadership skills of the ‘big boss’ was second to none as the former Anderlecht captain led the team to a successful Tunisia 1994 campaign.
Rufai, Oliseh and Keshi with the Tunisia 94′ trophy
Nigeria edged Zambia by 2 – 1 in final of the Africa Nations Cup tournament and Keshi rightfully lifted the Cup for the Super Eagles and our beloved country
3. Kanu Nwankwo
Africa’s first gold medal at a football event of the Olympics was won by the Dream Team and the lanky striker was an integral member of the team that walked up the podium.

Kanu scored the golden goal that gave Nigeria’s U-23 side a famous 4 – 3 win against the star-studded Brazilian team that went ahead on three occasions in the tension-soaked match.
4. Joseph Yobo
The 2013 Nations Cup win in South Africa was under the guidance of the late Stephen Keshi and a time Yobo drew the curtains on his playing career for the national team.

Nobody believed in the Nigerian team that was fielded in that tournament but as fate would have it, Yobo and his teammates won Nigeria’s third Nation Cup trophy.
Austin Okocha would have been one of Nigeria’s greatest captains, but was unfortunately denied winning a Nations Cup medal as he only won bronze in the 2004 Nations Cup in Tunisia.
