The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja, has reserved judgment on the case of Senate president Bukola Saraki –
A five-man panel of justices of the appellate court led by Justice Abdul Aboki, agreed to the judgment on the appeal
The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja, has reserved judgment in an appeal filed by the embattled Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki lodged against his trial before the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).
Vanguard reports that a five-man panel of justices of the appellate court led by Justice Abdul Aboki, agreed to the judgment on the appeal.
This was after the court heard arguments from Mr. Rotimi Jacobs, counsel to the federal government and Kanu Agabi, lead counsel to Saraki.
Recall that Saraki had gone before the appellate court to query the legal propriety of the 16-count criminal charge the federal government entered against him before the CCT.
He is challenging jurisdiction of the Justice Danladi Umar-led tribunal to try him on the basis of a charge he said was incompetent and legally defective.
The charge borders on his alleged false/anticipatory declaration of assets, money laundering, operation of foreign accounts while in office as the governor of Kwara state and allegation that he collected salaries as a governor, four years after his tenure had elapsed.
Meanwhile, Danladi Umar, chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), ruled that he will not withdraw from the trial of Saraki because there would be no one to sit in judgment over the case.
Saraki had earlier asked Umar to withdraw from the case due to his case with the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
But on Thursday, April 21, Umar had thrown away the application by the Senate president asking him to withdraw from the trial.
In the application, Saraki argued that the CCT chairman was biased. Saraki who has been undergoing trial since September 22, 2015 was charged with 16 counts of corruption.
