1. Frequently Shop for Quality Fruits

The nutrients of a fruit start decreasing when it is cut from a tree or plant. Do not purchase large quantities of fruits at a time when you go for shopping fruits. Instead, purchase small quantities of fruits frequently. This will help you in grabbing the freshest fruits. Avoid buying the fruits from grocery store as they might have travelled a long distance to reach there. It’s advisable to purchase fruits from the market of local farmers because quality matters a lot to keep your fruits fresh for a longer time period. Also ensure that there are no bruises, dark spots, mold or cuts on the fruits which you are shopping.

2. Take Fruits Out of the Paper Bag

Fruits are often kept in paper bag for ripening them. Avoid storing your fruits inside bags for keeping them fresher longer. Fruits need to breath and they also release gas. When you store your fruits in a closed and tight space then their gases will be ensnared and they start ripening faster. Hence the freshness of fruits will be lost.

3. Keep Larger and Citrus Fruits Away from Direct Sunlight

Larger fruits should not be kept in direct sunlight or heat. Instead store them in a dark, cool space. Also avoid keeping the citrus fruits in sunlight. These fruits include bananas, peaches, oranges, grapefruit, and pears.

Some fruits emit ethylene gas when they are ripened. This gas can also spoil other surrounding fruits. You must keep your ethylene-sensitive fruits and vegetables separately from those which release this gas. Ethylene-sensitive fruits and vegetables include apples, watermelons, asparagus, carrots, cucumbers, broccoli, potatoes, eggplants, lettuce, summer squash and green beans. Ethylene emitting fruits and vegetables are apricots, bananas, avocados, mangoes, kiwis, papayas, pears, honeydew melons, peaches, plums, nectarines, cantaloupes and tomatoes.
